Biography

Matthew Bodhi is not a name, but a vow.

Every song is written in the quiet space between love and loss. It's a living tribute to Elton-Lou, singer-songwriter Levi van Dommelen’s son, who recently passed away as a baby. These songs are not only sorrowful; they are full of love, light, warmth, and the small, bright moments that make a life. Each melody carries the full spectrum of emotion: joy, tenderness, grief, hope, and the strange comfort of remembering what once was.

This album is also a final bow of respect to Phil Vinall, the legendary producer who worked with Placebo, Radiohead, Zoé, ...  and Matthew Bodhi. The songs were produced in 2012, but are being released only now, posthumously, after Phil’s passing a few months ago. He recorded the album with top musicians, including Bert Gielen, Leendert Haaksma, Michel Bisceglia, Roberto Mercurio, Nina Babet, Rodrigo Fuentealba Palavicino, Davy Deckmijn and Bjorn Vanheusden.

The tracks were mixed by engineer Wes Maebe, who has worked with international artists such as James Arthur.

Matthew Bodhi's music is therefore not only a musical statement, but also a closing chapter in a creative partnership built on trust, restraint, and deep listening.

Matthew Bodhi is an emotional runway through the musical mind of singer-songwriter Levi van Dommelen. It is a band built around his voice, his piano and his songs. Together, they create music that translates emotion into sound.

What began as a band became a voice.
What began as noise became nuance.
Matthew Bodhi is the sound of a man learning how to listen to himself.
In a live setting, the band builds atmosphere with care: voices, piano, guitars, electronic beats and soundscapes weave together into a single, immersive tapestry. Every element is in service of the song, never overpowering, always present.

A HISTORY WRITTEN IN EVOLUTION
Levi van Dommelen first emerged as the frontman of the experimental rock band Process Of The Spirit, influenced by Radiohead, Muse and Placebo. His voice, elastic, intimate and haunting, drew attention early on. In edition 39 of Belgian Poppunt Magazine, his voice was compared to Matthew Bellamy (Muse), a comparison that would follow him for years.

After the studio recordings of the album Off The Planet (2007), the band toured extensively, moving from festival to festival, building a reputation for powerful live performances. The track “Confusion” found success in Canada, landing on radio playlists, while “No Freedom Of Speech” was selected for a national Belgian contest organised by AXA Bank and Ancienne Belgique.
The jury included:
- Peter Crosbie (producer for Daan, Axelle Red, Viktor Lazlo)
- Kurt Overbergh (Art Director @ Ancienne Belgique)
- Alex Stevens (Music Programmer @ Dour Festival)

In 2010, Process Of The Spirit released No Need For Poetry on Prova Records. The song “I’ll Die Soon” was featured in the film Mission Congo, marking Levi’s first experience of hearing his music resonate through cinemas. Around the same time, numerous Belgian artists publicly promoted his work online, traces of which still exist on YouTube.

FROM BAND TO SOLO ARTIST
In 2011, Levi ended Process Of The Spirit and began his solo career under the name Levi. He compiled songs written earlier alongside new material and sent them to Phil Vinall, who was working in Mexico at the time. A few days later, Vinall called. He wanted to work together.

During 2012, Levi and Vinall recorded a ten-track pop record. The album featured two collaborations with Dutch singer Sita and one with Belgian singer Stash. Instead of releasing the album as a whole, they would choose to release singles one by one.

The debut single “It’s Not Easy” received airplay on Belgian national radio Joe FM, accompanied by an interview. Radio host Raf Van Brussel compared Levi’s voice to Jeff Buckley, a comparison Levi has called the greatest honour of his career.

The follow-up single “Rain On You”, a duet with Sita, premiered on Q-Music (Que Pasa, presented by Eline De Munck). Levi wrote both the song and the storyline for its animated video, produced in England. The track later appeared in the national TV series Thuis on Eén, and received airplay on Radio 2.

PRODUCER, COLLABORATOR, SHAPE-SHIFTER
While preparing for live touring, Levi also produced other artists, including Sexy Sunday and Tom Cuvara, both of whom later received airplay on Studio Brussel and Q-Music. The production “House Of Mystics” by Sexy Sunday was selected by Netsky as Best Production on Studio Brussel.

In 2014, Levi collaborated with international DJ Peter Luts on the track “Miracle”, which entered playlists on Belgian national radio MNM, international stations worldwide, club circuits, and ultimately Tomorrowland.

MATTHEW BODHI
All previous names, Process Of The Spirit, Levi, Levi Louis, were steps toward clarity.

Matthew Bodhi is the distillation.

A band built around one voice, Levi van Dommelen's, and a body of work born from love, shaped by loss, and carried by craft.
A voice that holds grief without being consumed by it.
Music that remains, even when everything else leaves.
